The Charter

The ten Better Hiring Charter principles.

These principles bring together practical commitments organisations can use to improve hiring quality, trust and access to work.

1

Make use of sector-specific best practices

Use guidance and recommendations that are tailored to hiring in your industry sector, including Better Hiring Toolkits and other practical sector guidance.

2

Focus on skills, not just qualifications

Remove unnecessary job requirements and incorporate skills-based hiring to attract a wider, more diverse talent pool.

3

Provide transparency for job applicants

Clearly state salary details, flexible working options and role expectations in job descriptions and adverts, and communicate with applicants at each stage of the process.

4

Remove bias from the hiring process

Implement DE&I policies that help ensure individuals are hired based on skills and potential rather than personal characteristics.

5

Promote equal opportunity for women and other under-represented groups

Follow best practice guidance for promoting equality of pay and opportunity for everyone.

6

Champion wellbeing in the hiring process

Embed practices that support positive mental health for applicants and hirers, foster a respectful experience, and ensure people feel valued.

7

Adopt a digital-first approach to hiring

Use technology to achieve faster, fairer and safer hiring outcomes.

8

Use innovations such as AI responsibly

Follow best practice guidance so AI tools in hiring are used with fairness, transparency and without bias.

9

Promote a safeguarding culture to deter key risks such as hiring fraud

Implement safeguarding policies that address emerging digital risks, including data breaches and online hiring fraud, to protect the public and your organisation’s reputation.

10

Work with transparent recruitment partners

Use partners that demonstrate high levels of compliance with relevant regulations, including transparent and responsible online recruitment practices.
